최근 지구온난화로 인한 기후 변화로 대한민국의 여름이 4월부터 11월까지 이어질 수 있다는 전망이 나왔다. 계명대학교 환경공학과 김해동 교수는 올해 3월부터 따뜻한 날씨가 지속되어 사실상 8개월간 여름이 계속될 것으로 예측했다.
Recent climate changes suggest that South Korea’s summer could extend from April to November. Professor Kim Hae-dong of Kyungpook National University’s Environmental Engineering Department predicts that warm weather will persist from March, effectively resulting in an eight-month-long summer.
이러한 현상은 지구 온난화로 인한 아열대 기후화의 결과로, 온실가스 배출 증가로 인해 기온 상승과 계절 변화가 가속화되고 있다. 기상청의 분석에 따르면, 1912년부터 2020년까지 여름의 길이는 20일 늘어난 반면, 겨울은 22일 짧아졌다.
This phenomenon results from global warming-induced subtropicalization, where increased greenhouse gas emissions accelerate temperature rise and seasonal shifts. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration’s analysis, between 1912 and 2020, summer lengthened by 20 days, while winter shortened by 22 days.
한편, 인류의 지하수 남용으로 지구 자전축이 이동하고 있다는 연구도 주목받고 있다. 서울대학교 지구과학교육과 서기원 교수 연구팀은 1993년부터 2010년까지 약 2,150기가톤의 지하수 사용으로 해수면이 약 6mm 상승했으며, 이로 인해 지구 자전축이 동경 64도 방향으로 약 80cm 이동했다고 밝혔다.
Meanwhile, studies highlight that excessive groundwater extraction by humans is causing shifts in Earth’s rotational axis. Professor Seo Ki-won and his team from Seoul National University’s Department of Earth Science Education revealed that approximately 2,150 gigatons of groundwater extraction between 1993 and 2010 led to a sea-level rise of about 6mm, causing Earth’s rotational axis to shift approximately 80cm toward 64 degrees east.
지구 자전축의 변화는 계절 변화뿐만 아니라 항공기 경로에도 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 자전축 이동으로 인해 위성항법장치(GPS)에 오차가 발생할 수 있으며, 이는 항공기, 미사일, 지도 앱 등의 정확도에 영향을 줄 수 있다.
Changes in Earth’s rotational axis can affect not only seasonal patterns but also aircraft routes. Shifts in the axis may introduce errors in Global Positioning Systems (GPS), impacting the accuracy of aircraft navigation, missiles, and mapping applications.
기후 변화와 지구 자전축 변화의 주된 원인은 인간의 활동으로 인한 온실가스 배출과 지하수 남용이다. 이를 완화하기 위해서는 정부, 기업, 개인 모두의 노력이 필요하다. 정부는 기후 변화 대응 정책을 강화하고, 기업은 친환경 에너지 도입을 확대하며, 개인은 에너지 절약과 친환경 생활 습관을 실천해야 한다.
